Our solidarity and commitment to safety is how we honor the memory of Cedric J Jones, vice-president of UTU Local 1138, killed November 29, 2004, at Vitis Junction, Florida.

Representing conductors, trainmen, & yardmen working for CSX Transportation in Miami, Florida.

¨ UTU Local 1138 is composed of train & engine service employees of CSX Transportation in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach, and of the Florida East Coast Railway in Hialeah, West Palm Beach, and Ft. Pierce. We are part of General Committee 851, based in Jacksonville, FL.

¨ UTU Local 1138 meets the third Thursday of each month. For exact times & location, check postings in the crew room or send a request to utu1138a@atlanticbb.net to be placed on our email list.

¨ Our local committee handles grievances and disciplinary cases for CSX train service employees under the provisions of the Railway Labor Act, the UTU national agreement, and the supplementary agreements with the employer. We also advocate for improved working conditions for our members.

¨ Rail safety is one of the central responsibilities of the Federal Railroad Administration; but safety issues that are not covered under the FRA regulations fall under the jurisdiction of the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA).

¨ UTU Local 1138-851A participates in a joint safety committee with UTU engineers, represented by Local Committee of Adjustment 851-B, and UTU yardmasters in order to resolve safety concerns. But it is our members who are the eyes and ears on the property; they are often the first to notice and report hazards. The safety committee then follows up on complaints and issues raised by these members and other coworkers.
